Client Critiques

This is a awesome tiny camera with alot of enjoyable characteristics. I had a hard time deciding between the s8100 and the s6100 since the s8100 takes more quickly photos, 1080 video, a improved sensor, and bigger zoom. The capabilities listed below are the factors I chose the s6100.

Touch screen--can use your finger but it can be a small tricky to move it just ideal. It does come with a stylus that allows you to move via the screens rapidly. Tends to make it very uncomplicated to get by means of the menus. The menu on the left has the options for flash, self-timer, macro, and exposure compensation. The menu on the bottom has the alternatives for touch shutter, image mode, film possibilities, and settings. The battery levels are often displayed in the left hand corner so there is no guessing how substantially battery is left. Above that the scene mode is displayed.

Scene selection--There are 19 scenes to pick out from plus the scene auto selector. When you push the scene button and all 20 solutions are listed there is a question mark box in the upper suitable hand corner that will clarify the several modes to aid you choose the ideal 1.

Filter Effects--It has the capacity to draw or write on pictures, add decorations, cross screen, fish eye, selective color, black and white, sepia. I have messed about with a few of these features, I will try to upload a handful of photos. It also has glamour retouch and skin softening.

Playback button--Has choices to star a photo as favored, delete, slide show, defend, print, draw, retouch, voice record, and settings.

Charger--This camera can charge through your personal computer or it also has an adapter much like most cell phones now do so you can use the USB cord to charge utilizing an outlet. There is a light on the back that flashes to let you know it is charging.

The dedicated movie button tends to make it especially very simple to record videos. Unlike the 8100, you can't take a photo when you are recording with the 6100.

From the opinion of a hobby photographer, I assume there are alot of features nicely packaged into this pocket-sized camera.

I've owned this camera for three-months and waited until now to write a critique for the reason that it was a gift and I certainly wanted to like this camera. But the significantly more I've made use of it the less I like it. To be fair, it can take a descent image below optimal conditions if you are cautious, but so can a 1968 Kodak Brownie in the correct hands. I definitely expected even more from Nikon and contemporary electronic technology.

Let me give you a little additional background... I'm 63 years old and I've been taking pictures given that I was 8 years old. Final winter I suffered a stroke which affected the coordination in my left hand and I discovered it difficuly to operate my Nikon D50 SLR. My wife, trying to be nice to me purchased an S6100 for my birthday simply because she assumed that a point-and-shoot would be simpler and less frustrating for me to use than my D50 SLR. I was excited to get it and try it out. The Nikon S6100 was smaller, lighter and less difficult to carry. As far as getting simpler to use,

it is NOT! A person would expect an automatic point-and-shoot camera to be just that, point it, press the shutter release and get a fair image most of the time. That is one thing this camera cannot do with any regularity. A pox on Nikons property for the damn touch screen controls! Why have a touch screen shutter release function that duplicates the function of the shutter release button? Though you try to hold the camera with your appropriate hand you are pretty much forced to touch the screen when trying to frame the image and push the "real button". This a lot more frequently than not activates the shutter resulting in a image of the ground, your pant leg, or shoe. Then while you wait for the exceedingly slow electronics to shop that image on the memory card, you miss numerous oportunities to attempt for a very good shot. Would that this was the only issue with the touch screen. Nikon created this cameras controls so the ONLY way to control several camera functions is through a menu method controlled applying the touch screen. If that had been not poor adequate the screen itself is not sensitive sufficient to respond nicely to a finger touch unless you use a lengthy finger nail or the small stylus hung on the wrist strap. This virtually insures that you cannot make any sort of speedy selection modifications although you try to shoot. You may possibly wonder if that screen does something else. Yes, it shows a fairly bright image to use as a viewfinder or to evaluation photographs of your shoes taken by mistake. Of course it is constantly smugged and dirty since you have to be touching it all the time.

How about the overall function? The S6100 is as functional as most of it really is competitors in the crowded point-and-shoot field. It is a snapshot camera at ideal loaded with troublesome to control functions and totally unecessary post shooting editing functions that are much greater completed on your computer system immediately after you download the pictures. I expected superior from Nikon and I definitely thought that a 16 megapixel sensor would capture superior superior shots. Once more I was disappointed. My 6 megapixel D50 captures better images and it really is more than 5-years old. In anything other than optimal light, the automatic functions of the S6100 bump up the ISO a handful of clicks and when that's happened the image easily gets grainy without having gaining really good exposure. Once more I certain expected better from the newer class of sensors and software. The S6100 can also take Quicktime films with a single press of the movie button on the back. This would be a nice function if the movie button were not smaller placed straight beneath the appropriate side thumb grip, virtually ensuring that you will take some short motion pictures you didn't want, once more often of the ground, your shoe, or the sky.

Oh, and then there is battery life. Not too good. I can get perhaps 200 shots and a short film before the "battery exhausted" message pops up on the screen, and then you are completed since the only way to recharge it is to plug the entire camera into the charger or a computer USB port, you will be out of luck in the field unless you invest in a second battery, maintain it charged and in your pocket whilst you'r out shooting.

Do you assume I've been be too unfavorable about the S6100?

Right here are the really good things about it:

1. It really is smaller, light, and fits easily in a shirt pocket or purse

two. The zoom lens is Nikon, and they do make the finest optics and the wide to full zoom is all you will almost certainly ever need to have.

three. When you manage to get a snap shot it really is generally of sufficient superior, at least for your family members album.

MY RECOMMEDATIONS:

If you want a point-and shoot Nikon, check out the S8100 or S9100, both substantially superior cameras at only a slightly higher value.

If you want terrific photos and care about control of your camera functions get a Digital SLR and master how to use it.

If you want a touch screen get a intelligent phone. Most of those will take photographs and movies too, and could possibly be simpler to use than this camera, plus when you get frustrated with the smugged up touch screen, at least you can use it to call someone who cares.

Consumer Critiques

Just after extensive analysis on advanced point-and-shoots that use AA batteries (something I demand), I settled on 3: the Nikon L100, the Canon Powershot SX10IS, and the Fujifilm s8100fd. So you know the perspective from which this critique is coming, I am not an seasoned photographer but I am not clueless either. Nevertheless, this is my 1st camera a great deal more advanced than a simple point-and-shoot. So I'll call myself an informed beginner.

This is why I chose the L100:

Price: The L100 is drastically much less pricey than the SX10IS. The s8100fd's cost was comparable to the L100, but I felt that the technologies on the L100 was better. Amazon had the very best price I could locate (besides some sketchy via the internet sellers).

Technology: This was a toughy. All 3 of these cameras have comparable technology (image stabilization, zoom, megapixels, face recognition, scene modes, etc. etc.) and each and every has a single or two exclusive functions that I discovered rather desirable. So this variable was not a deal maker or breaker for me. But when it came down to it, the L100 is the most beginner-friendly of the 3 cameras. The Auto Modes do literally almost everything for you: the camera chooses the shutter speed, ISO, aperture, no flash or one of a quantity of flash modes, AND scene mode, which neither of the other cameras do. So from vibrant- to low- light situations and from diverse distances, it will automatically adjust a lot more elements of the shot than will the other cameras. This, I consider, would be particularly appealing to the minimally seasoned photographer who just desires to click the button wherever they are and come out with superb pictures.

WEIGHT AND SIZE: I handled a Canon Powershot SX10IS at the store and it was just too heavy for my liking (a widespread complaint, from what I've read). The L100 is extremely lightweight. Despite the fact that the s8100fd is of similar weight, the L100 is slightly smaller in size, which I like.

Larger SCREEN: The three inch LCD is bigger than the screens on the other cameras, it is really vivid, and it has a coating that reduces glare.

After playing around with the camera for a handful of days, right here are some extra observations/impressions:

MENU: The menu is especially user-friendly and easily navigable. No concerns there. Take ten minutes to read by way of the manual so you are aware of all the menu choices.

Style AND Really feel: It is not a slippery camera, which appears to be a complaint with some of the comparable cameras I've read reviews about. The buttons seem intuitively placed to me, and the camera feels balanced in my hand.

IMAGE STABILIZATION: This works particularly well. As lengthy as you are in the perfect mode (read the manual for descriptions of scenarios you must pick out the modes yourself) the camera takes absolutely focused and clear photos, even with an unsteady hand.

BATTERIES and MEMORY CARD: The battery life on this camera is very good: 900 shots with Li-Ion batteries. Some many people do not like the SD card to be accessible in the similar door as the batteries (like it is with this camera), but I don't come across a challenge with it. I bought an Ultra II SDHC card for the camera and it processes the photographs quite immediately.

Film MODE: You can zoom 2x when shooting video, which is good.

OTHER Characteristics I LIKED: The Perfect Shot Selector is a unique function that I like. It's just another 1 of those very beginner-friendly capabilities of this camera that will enable you to take outstanding shots with no having to do a lot. The Sports continuous-shooting mode (shooting 13 frames per second) also works well for action shots.

TAKING Photos: Like I talked about before, I am not an seasoned photographer. But I identified that out of the box in the "Simple and easy-Auto" Mode, this camera takes focused, sharp, skilled-searching images. As I started to play about with other characteristics, I became even far more impressed with the excellent of the images in a variety of lighting, distance, and motion circumstances. The High ISO mode captures motion Extremely well! I 1st tested it by waving my arm in the mirror as rapid as I could and taking photographs, and the camera captured perfectly focused and crisp pictures of me. This is the initial camera I've ever employed that really captures excellent movement shots. Even at maximum zoom, the shots are focused and look good. The flash is exceptionally vibrant, despite the fact that I obtain I hardly ever need to use it.

The only complaint that I have at this point is that the camera has trouble focusing on objects in dim light, including close objects in Macro Mode. Nevertheless, from the dozens of evaluations I've read on other comparable cameras, this seems to be a well-known issue. It is also probable that I haven't played about with the camera enough to know how to circumvent the predicament, but I still was a tiny disappointed.

Overall: This camera is inexpensive for it's class, lightweight, has the most recent technology, and is very beginner- and user-friendly. It is the fantastic camera for somebody who wants something far more than a fundamental point-and-shoot but doesn't want to invest the money on an SLR or the power trying to figure out a a great deal more complicated camera to get good shots. For those beginner to moderately skilled photographers debating among an advanced point-and-shoot and a SLR (like I initially did), you will be glad you got this more than an expensive and bulky SLR. A SLR with a 15x+ telephoto lens will price 3-4 instances as significantly as this camera, and I am pretty pleased with the high quality of the pictures I am obtaining with the L100. The Simple-Auto and Auto modes are wonderful and I believe most folks will be incredibly pleased with the shots they will create when in them, even if they never ever leave those modes. Still, studying all of the attributes is quick and hasn't taken me that lengthy, and my photos have looked a great deal more and even more expert the more I've played about with them. This is a fantastic camera.

PS-I got the M-Rock Ozark 505 case for this camera and it fits it perfectly

----------------------------

Right here is a video collage of pictures I took with this camera in Namibia - [...]

I believed I would emphasize the rechargeable battery since Nikon just added it recently and some reviewers were saying the L100 couldn't use a rechargeable battery. It's a NI-MH battery with recharger. Check the NIKON webpage for the L100 and you will see it listed below "optional accessories". Personally, I do not like rechargeables because they lose their charge over time and you have to recall to recharge them when you get ready to use your camera. I'd significantly rather just pop in a set of alkaline AA's. Then battery price is about a penny a pic. I can afford that.

Right here are the factors I bought this camera. I use it to do stop-motion shooting in the woods employing toy action figures, also on a copy stand to copy greaseboard drawings for animation, and just for common photo shooting. This camera helps since:

(1) It has a flat bottom and with a triangular footprint which implies it will not fall more than when you set it down. No tripod needed. I put a flat piece of wood between it and the ground to defend it.

(two) The 15X Zoom lens widens all the way out to 5mm which is equivalent to a 28mm lens on a 35mm camera. Most digicams only go down to about 6mm or five.7mm on the wide end. (The 75mm telephoto end of the zoom is about as powerful as you can have and nonetheless maintain steady with a handheld shot. This camera has a double program of vibration control to help stay clear of blurred shots.)

(3) The scene modes consist of a single named "Food" mode which is quite useful to me. It automatically switches to macro close-up lens and puts manage of color balance on the arrow buttons where you can conveniently adjust it. Then, whatever color balance you set stays in memory (just for the Food mode) until the subsequent time you use Food mode, even if you turn the energy off. That is very important for quit motion for the reason that you don't want the camera automatically resetting the color balance for every shot. Definitely the Food mode is intended for close-up shooting of food, but it functions for me and my toys!

(4) There is an AC adapter for the camera, which I have ordered, so I will not be applying any batteries for my in-the-studio shooting.

(five) NIKON superior. I tried this camera in the store and couldn't even hear the zoom operate. By contrast, a related-priced CANON made a distinct grinding noise. The superior even extends to the four manuals - a 134 page key manual in English, a 20 page Quickstart manual in English, and then each manuals fully duplicated in Spanish as well. The manuals cover each function in clear detail. It took me 2 hours to learn the camera features to my personal satisfaction, BUT, there is an "Uncomplicated AUTO" mode that requires you to know nothing at all from the manual other than how to push a shutter button. Of course, perhaps you must purchase a simpler camera if that's all you want from your camera, but with the "Effortless AUTO" mode you can share this camera with all loved ones members, even the ones who do not want to know what color balance is.

(6) Perhaps I am thinking illogically, but I believe that a massive lens takes superior photos than a little lens... and this camera has a Large lens. That signifies you cannot slip it in your pocket, but I have a nifty small belt-loop case (the Edit 100) that neatly fits the camera and has pockets for two sets of four AA batteries and space for the SD memory card's case and possibly a couple of significantly more smaller items.

To sum it up, the top quality is high, the price tag is low, and it takes excellent images in a variety of circumstances with an simple-ro-use operating program. If you want extra than that, then get a reflex camera and pretend you are a pro. :)

Customer Reviews

For the price of this camera, I don't feel you can get anything better. The low light performance is off the charts. As a wedding photographer I often shoot with Nikon's high end expert gear and I was amazed how close this camera is to a pro camera. Now let me get particular. In order to compare I took a look at 100% files out of each camera I personal.

Which camera excels Nikon D3100($Low cost) VS. D300($1600) VS. D700 ($2,700):

Lens = The D3100 is the only camera that comes with a lens at it really is typical price tag

ISO Efficiency = Tie amongst D3100 and D700! (It could be Nikon's new processing but the JPEG looks fantastic I was shooting D3100 on 6400iso with particularly small noise at all)

Low Light Focusing = D700

Focus Speed = D700

External Buttons Controls for Pros = D700

Menu Navigation = D3100

Ease of Use = D3100

Megapixel = D3100 (14.2)

Sensor size = D700 (Much a lot more very important than megapixels but I won't get into this)

Can use older lenses with functionality = D700 D300

Video = D3100 of course! 1080P video looks remarkable.

Frame Rate = D300 at 6 photographs a second

Weight = D3100 (light as a feather)

Ergonomics = D700 (significant sufficient for all my finger)

Lens:

The lens is a kit lens, it will function outside but not so excellent in low light. The Vibration Reduction will help indoors but Vibration Reduction cannot cease a kid or pet in motion indoors. Look at acquiring a 35mm 1.8dx AFS for about $200 and you will be super pleased with this camera.

Video:

I bought the 3100 particularly to shoot video, so I put on Nikon's brand new 85mm 1.4g Nano lens and shot video with it. The lens charges far more than double the camera but I wanted to see how the 1080P video looked. It has the appear of a cinematic movie. Soon after the 85mm, I put on Nikon's 50 1.2 manual concentrate lens and was able to take really cinematic video in manual mode. In order to make it brighter or darker you either want to use a seriously old lens like the 50mm 1.two and hit the AE-L (auto exposure lock) and twist the aperture to change exposure. Or you can hit the AE-L button when you get the exposure you like. Its not a fantastic method but it works well for me. Inside the menu solutions you can adjust the AE-L button to hold the setting till you reset which is helpful.

Jello Cam (What is not so terrific):

This camera nonetheless suffers from the "Jello Cam" look in video if it is not on a tripod and you are shaky. The video can appear like jello if moved too easily. Use a monopod or tripod when shooting to avoid this. I'm not certain if a faster video frame rate 60fps would assist - but at 24 and 30 it can suffer badly.

Conclusion:

This is an impressive deal! Unless you make most of your earnings from photography or have a stockpile of old lenses (this camera can only autofocus with AFS lenses) then this camera is the need to have camera of the year. If you have wonderful composition abilities and an eye for light you can take pictures worthy of a magazine with this. Seriously, you will not regret purchasing this camera. When you do, do your self a favor and obtain an additional Nikon AFS lens that has a maximum aperture of two.8, 1.8 or 1.four. These lenses will take better portraits and deal superior in low light than the kit lens.

Hurray! The long wait is over! Nikon had us wait for such a lengthy time for its newer models (D3100 and D7000) and it was just when we started thinking if Nikon will ever have an answer, anytime soon, to Canon's T2i, 7D and 60D) they released these two wonderful cameras - D3100 and D7000. Let's concentrate on D3100, shall we?

So I finally had a opportunity to get hold of this D-SLR at Very best Order these days. I am not a pro by any means but I have used a lot of numerous D-SLRs such as Canon (40D, T2i, XSi) and Nikon (D90, D5000). When I picked-up the camera for the first time, my initial reaction was, "whoa - this is so little and light weight"! It wasn't that I wasn't aware of the specs - I knew them beforehand but I was still blown away by how tiny and light it felt when I held it in my hands. Then, I thought, the grip would not be incredibly comfy but I was incorrect as holding and operating the camera is just fine - thanks to Nikon's well-thought-out style and grip. For the size and really feel, it's pretty related to D3000 but has a lot more goodies from the greater versions. So from an initial wow aspect, I promptly moved on to focusing on features and capabilities.

I have just began using this camera so far more update will adhere to but in the meantime my initial assessment of this camera is - I am impressed! It is 1 heck of a camera which can definitely compete against the best in its class (Canon T1i, T2i, Nikon D5000). Check out detailed reviews at dpreview (.com) and cameralabs (.com) - they must be added soon if not currently there.

I like this camera because it:

+ has sufficient mega pixels for my requirements (14.two).

+ captures crystal clear images (thanks to EXPEED2 processor the CMOS sensor, the sensor is slightly smaller than the a single employed in D7000).

+ gives 1080p (HD) recording, AF topic tracking is wonderful (10 min max is fine with me it records outstanding videos even in low light and to me that is massive).

+ delivers ISO from 100-3200 (D90 begins at 200), it can go greater but I truly don't consider why I would need something above that.

+ is small light weight however has good grip, straightforward to carry about in hands or neck.

+ supports SDXC cards on best of SD and SDHC - now that's nice.

+ (25-Sep-2010): has buttons that are well organized particularly the video recording mode with a lever so you can't mistakenly activate recording. That video recording lever when unlocked, gets locked in 30 seconds if you do not record and the countdown begins as soon as you unlock the lever. Also you can record video although you happen to be in any dial (imaging) mode (Auto, P, A, S, M, and so on) where as in Canon T2i, etc. you have to move the camera dial to film mode. So this is a superb convenience - you can jump among taking photographs and recording videos with a hassle-free unlocking of the lever. In addition, you can be in a preferred dial (imaging) mode (Auto, P, A, S, M, and so on) and adjust the release mode to Single, Continuous, Self-timer or Quiet mode (this is located suitable underneath the key dial) - a further fantastic handy feature.

+ (04-Oct-2010): In-physique photo and movie retouch menu. This is excellent as we do not will need any special software program to apply certain touches. I adore it.

Could have been even much better if:

- it had the bracketing alternative (not too significantly to expect at this price point level but oh nicely I don't use that substantially but for some men and women this could be a significant plus).

- grid lines were offered (I miss them in each in live view and in the view finder).

- Active D Lighting was not restricted to just ON or OFF (either you have it or not at all, instead of low, medium, high, and so on.). Do not get me incorrect the ON just worked fine (much better than Canon T2i) but I cannot compare with all other modes.

Recommendations (optional accessories):

In my private order of significance - your preference might differ.

1. Nikon UC-E4 USB Cable - not included. (~$6)

two. UV filter - a should for protecting your lens against accidental damage. (~ten$)

3. Carrying case is a have to to safeguard your investment. There are a lot of situations to pick from and it is up to you to determine but I recommend acquiring some thing like Lowepro SlingShot 102 AW (all climate proof carrying case) so if it rains, you can pull out the weather guard and cover it up. ($90)

4. Extra rechargeable Lithium Ion EN-EL14 battery so you in no way run out the juice when you are traveling and do not want to miss capturing a moment for really good. (~$35)

5. SB-600 Speedlight. Those who have utilised speed lights would know what distinction it can make to an image with adjustments you can make to light for an image. (~$225)

6. 18-55 VR lens has its limitations so if you have extra $$$s, invest in physique only (if that even is an option) and get yourself a 18-105 VR lens. But at that point, you can want to give some thought to D90 which nevertheless is a very good camera and offers a number of alot more controls. (~$325 to $350)

Overall:

I give this camera five Stars considering it takes terrific pictures in practically all circumstances (bright or low-light) and that is exactly what I wanted this camera to do for me. Period.

I have to commend Nikon for not getting into the mega pixel race (read marketing and advertising). They rather kept the photographer in thoughts and focused on delivering better picture superior. Kudos to Nikon for getting that courage.
